Job Description

Upper Albany Main Street is seeking a detail-driven, business-savvy Data Analyst to join our mission of empowering small and micro businesses in the community. In this part-time role, you’ll turn raw data into meaningful insights that help entrepreneurs make smarter, data-informed decisions. You’ll work directly with business owners to identify opportunities, improve performance, and simplify complex information into actionable strategies.  This is an ideal position for someone who thrives in fast-paced, grassroots environments and is passionate about using data to create real, local impact.

This position is 100% grant-funded contingent upon annual renewal of external funding.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyze sales, marketing, customer, and operational data to uncover trends and growth opportunities
  • Design and manage an externally accessible, user-friendly web dashboard that allows stakeholders to visualize, filter, and export data. The interactive interface enables trend analysis, insight discovery, and customized output to meet specific needs.
  • Build and maintain dashboards and reports using tools like Excel, Google Sheets, Power BI, or Tableau
  • Identify and track key performance indicators (KPIs) tailored to each client’s business goals
  • Present findings in clear, digestible formats for non-technical small business owners
  • Collaborate with business owners to recommend data-backed improvements and strategies
  • Clean, normalize, and validate data from diverse sources such as eCommerce platforms, POS systems, and CRMs
  • Assist businesses in setting up or refining data collection processes
  • Monitor the outcomes of business changes and report on effectiveness over time

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Strong proficiency in business analytics, Excel and/or Google Sheets (pivot tables, charts, advanced functions)
  • Familiarity with business metrics such as Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC), Lifetime Value (LTV), and ROI
  • Experience with reporting tools (Power Bi experience preferred)
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate complex data into simple insights
  • Self-motivated, organized, and comfortable managing multiple small projects simultaneously
  • Strong attention to detail and a natural curiosity to investigate data trends
  • Ability to work with incomplete or inconsistent data, common in small business environments

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with entrepreneurs, startups, or family-owned businesses
  • Background in marketing analytics, financial modeling, operations, or eCommerce
  • Familiarity with small business tools such as QuickBooks, Shopify, Stripe, Google Analytics, or CRM platforms
  • Previous consulting or freelance experience with small business clients
