Upper Albany Main Street History

Our History

Founded in 2000, Upper Albany Main Street (UAMS) is a dedicated economic development and community revitalization organization located in the historic Upper Albany neighborhood of Hartford, Connecticut.

In 2013, UAMS earned accreditation as a National Main Street Community Development Business Organization by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, reinforcing our role as a catalyst for the economic renewal of the Albany Avenue commercial corridor.

Celebrating The Vibrant Culture of Albany Avenue

As the leading community-business organization on the Avenue, Upper Albany Main Street recognizes that economic development is essential to enhancing the quality of life for all who live, work, and visit the vibrant and diverse Upper Albany neighborhood. The organization’s primary customer base includes residents and business owners, while our broader reach extends to the wider community.

By celebrating the rich African American and West Indian heritage of the area, UAMS strives to transform the Upper Albany neighborhood into a must-visit destination for those who might not otherwise explore the neighborhood. Upper Albany Main Street remains committed to securing resources that benefit all stakeholders invested in the community’s growth.

As a mission-driven organization, UAMS serves as an economic engine for Hartford by supporting small businesses, fostering entrepreneurship, and establishing Albany Avenue as a thriving Afro-Caribbean destination. As a gateway community, Upper Albany’s success is key to the ongoing renaissance of the City of Hartford.
