“I first connected with Upper Albany Main Street (UAMS) in the spring of 2022 while working as principal at Faith SDA School. I needed help blocking off part of Woodland Street for a school event. To my surprise, I didn’t have to go all the way downtown—UAMS handled everything right from their office. At that time, I was setting up a business and came in with community questions. I got more than answers—I got action. After forming my 501(c)(3), I joined the Business Association later that year and began attending weekly meetings that kept me in the loop with community updates, business development, and local partnerships.
UAMS has played a critical role in my business journey. After retiring in 2022, I became fully engaged with their services—from digital literacy training, which introduced me to Canva, to the business incubation program that gave me a formal office space. This incubation has allowed me to host student interns, meet clients, and operate professionally outside of my home office.
The workshops through their Protect & Comply program have been another highlight—covering workplace safety, insurance, and more, with real resources and referrals. I’ve also benefited from the MBI program, where students gain hands-on experience while supporting my business.
What I value most is the relationship. The support from Ms. Beverly Redd, the UAMS staff, and the wider network of business leaders has been phenomenal. UAMS brings in people and opportunities I would never have accessed on my own. They continue to shed light on what’s happening in Hartford and have their finger on the pulse of the community.
