Module Overview

This lesson teaches learners how to set up products and organize them into collections in Shopify. Proper product management and collections structure improve store navigation, usability, and sales.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, learners will be able to:

  • Add and configure different types of products in Shopify

  • Manage product details including descriptions, images, pricing, and inventory

  • Create product variants (size, color, material)

  • Organize products into collections for easier navigation

  • Understand best practices for product and collection management

Lesson 1: Product Types in Shopify

In Shopify, product types are categories you assign to your products to organize and manage your store more efficiently. They help you group similar products together, making it easier to filter, sort, and analyze your inventory. For example, a clothing store might use product types like “T-Shirts,” “Jeans,” or “Jackets.” Product types are also useful for creating collections, running promotions, and generating reports, as they allow you to quickly identify and manage specific groups of products. Assigning accurate product types ensures your store stays organized and helps customers find what they’re looking for more easily.

Simple Products: Single item without variants

  • Products with Variants: Items with multiple options (e.g., sizes, colors)

  • Digital Products: Files or downloads delivered electronically

  • Service Products: Non-physical offerings like consultations or subscriptions

Lesson 2: Adding a Product

Steps

  1. Navigate to Products → All Products → Add Product

  2. Enter product title and description

  3. Upload product images and media

  4. Set pricing, compare-at price (for sales), and cost per item

  5. Configure inventory settings (SKU, quantity, tracking)

  6. Add shipping details (weight, delivery options)

  7. Add product tags, vendor, and product type

  8. Save or publish product

Best Practices

  • Use clear, benefit-focused product descriptions

  • High-quality images with multiple angles

  • Proper SKU and inventory tracking

  • Include SEO-friendly product title and description

Lesson 3: Product Variants

  • Variants allow multiple options for a single product

  • Example: T-shirt with sizes S, M, L and colors Red, Blue

  • Configure pricing, inventory, and SKU for each variant

  • Steps: Enable variants → Add options → Enter details for each variant

Lesson 4: Collections

In Shopify, collections are groups of products organized around a common theme, purpose, or characteristic, making it easier for customers to browse your store. Unlike product types, which categorize products broadly for management purposes, collections are often customer-facing and can be based on things like sales, seasons, product features, or promotions—for example, “Summer Essentials,” “Best Sellers,” or “Under $50.” Collections can be manual, where you handpick products, or automated, where Shopify adds products automatically based on criteria like product type, tags, or price. Using collections effectively improves navigation, enhances the shopping experience, and helps showcase related products to boost sales.

Collections group products for easier browsing

  • Types:

    • Manual Collections: Add products individually

    • Automated Collections: Products added automatically based on conditions (tags, product type, price, etc.)

Steps to Create a Collection

  1. Navigate to Products → Collections → Create Collection

  2. Enter collection name and description

  3. Choose manual or automated collection type

  4. Add products (manual) or set conditions (automated)

  5. Customize collection image and SEO settings

  6. Save and publish

Best Practices

  • Logical grouping improves user experience (e.g., by category, season, sale)

  • Keep collection names clear and concise

  • Use high-quality images for collection banners

  • Limit number of products per collection for clarity if needed

Lesson 5: Common Mistakes

  • Poor or missing product images

  • Confusing variant setup or SKU management

  • Unorganized collections leading to difficult navigation

  • Lack of SEO optimization in product titles and descriptions

  • Not tracking inventory or stock properly

Practical Activity

  • Add a sample product to your Shopify store

  • Configure product details, pricing, inventory, and images

  • Create two variants for the product (e.g., size or color)

  • Set up a manual collection and add the product

  • Set up an automated collection using a tag or product type

  • Preview the collections on the storefront

Key Takeaways

  • Proper product setup and variant management are crucial for sales and inventory tracking

  • Collections organize products for better navigation and customer experience

  • Manual and automated collections provide flexibility in product grouping

  • Quality images, descriptions, and SEO improve visibility and conversions
